Here is a little tip to get students to use fixed expressions without having to print them and give to the students to try to use.

I did this with “interruption phrases”, but could easily work with any turn-taking functional language:

  1. In groups, students stand up, but only on one leg.
  2. Once a student uses one of the fixed expressions, they can put their leg down.
  3. The second time they use another fixed expression, they can sit down. They must stay part of the group conversation even whilst sat down.
  4. Once all the students in the group have sat down, they can go on break!

Quick, simple, and effective in making students who don’t always engage in a group discussion to get involved.

Plus, it’s rather amusing for you, the teacher, to watch your students all trying to balance on one leg!!!!
