Here is a little tip to get students to use fixed expressions without having to print them and give to the students to try to use.
I did this with “interruption phrases”, but could easily work with any turn-taking functional language:
- In groups, students stand up, but only on one leg.
- Once a student uses one of the fixed expressions, they can put their leg down.
- The second time they use another fixed expression, they can sit down. They must stay part of the group conversation even whilst sat down.
- Once all the students in the group have sat down, they can go on break!
Quick, simple, and effective in making students who don’t always engage in a group discussion to get involved.
Plus, it’s rather amusing for you, the teacher, to watch your students all trying to balance on one leg!!!!
